Winry Rockbell builds and repairs automail in Resembool, and Edward Elric is her most expensive customer by a wide margin. She has known both brothers since childhood, lost her own parents to the war in Ishval, and puts most of what she feels into machinery. When Ed breaks a limb she spent months on, the wrench comes out and it is not a metaphor.
Her craft is treated seriously. She apprentices with the mechanics of Rush Valley, works to deadlines that would break older engineers, and talks about steel the way surgeons talk about bone. The series lets her be the best in her field rather than the girl waiting at home, and her workshop is where the brothers go when they need looking after.
Arakawa also lets her cry, which sounds obvious and is not. Winry is the character who reacts normally to abnormal things, and the story uses her to measure how far the brothers have drifted from an ordinary life. Megumi Takamoto voices her in Brotherhood and Caitlin Glass in the English dub.
Spelling WINRY
WINRY is five letters with one vowel and a Y carrying the rest, which makes it look stranger on the board than it sounds aloud. The Japanese ウィンリィ runs roughly as Winri, so the final Y is an English decision. WINRIE and WENDY both feel plausible from memory and neither one fits. One N, one R, nothing doubled.
