Yami Sukehiro came from the Land of the Sun, was swept out to sea as a boy, and arrived in the Clover Kingdom speaking none of the language. He grew into a large man with a katana, a cigarette permanently attached, and dark magic, an attribute so rare that most mages in the kingdom have never watched anyone use it.
Dark magic is slow and it eats other attributes. Yami compensates by cutting. His signature is a slash that opens the gap between dimensions, and his other trick is refusing to move when something enormous is coming towards him. The line he repeats to his squad is about surpassing your limits right here, right now, which in his hands is less encouragement than instruction.
The Black Bulls are the squad every other captain declined, and Yami takes them because he was declined once himself. He drinks, he bullies his subordinates for entertainment, and he is one of the two or three people in the kingdom you would want standing in a doorway. Tabata gave him the best entrances in the series and the anime spends them freely.
Spelling YAMI
YAMI is the Japanese word for darkness, 闇, which is also his magic attribute, so the name is a joke the manga never bothers to explain. Four letters, and the game wants the family name rather than Sukehiro. Two vowels alternating with two consonants means a single confirmed letter usually hands you the shape of the whole row.
