Yugi Mutou is short, gentle, bullied, and obsessed with games. His grandfather runs a game shop, and the golden box in the back of it took Yugi eight years to assemble. Completing the Millennium Puzzle granted a wish he made about friendship and also installed a pharaoh in his head, which is more than the instructions promised.
The early manga is much stranger than the card-game reputation suggests. Yugi and the spirit played dice, dominoes, capsule monsters, and various improvised horrors against adults who preyed on children, and the punishments were psychological. Duel Monsters was one game among many until readers voted with their attention, and Kazuki Takahashi rebuilt the series around it.
That decision produced a real trading card game which has sold in the tens of billions of cards, so the fictional tournament arcs describe an industry that the manga itself created. Yugi remains the quiet half of the partnership, and the series keeps insisting that the timid boy, rather than the pharaoh, is the one who wins the arguments that matter.
Spelling YUGI
YUGI is four letters and the title is the clue. 遊戯 means game or play, and Yu-Gi-Oh! is King of Games, so the character was named after the thing he does. Otakana wants the given name, not Mutou, which carries a long vowel of its own. Two syllables, yu-gi, with a hard G rather than a J sound.
