Yukine is a spirit taken on as regalia, a weapon formed out of the soul of somebody who died young. Yato names him, and the name is what turns him into a blade. This is not a gift. Regalia feel what their god feels, and a god is poisoned by his regalia's misbehaviour, so the two of them are wired together whether they like each other or not.
For a long stretch of the early manga they do not. Yukine is angry about being dead, steals things, resents Hiyori's ordinary school life, and every offence lands on Yato as a physical blight. The arc that resolves it is the point where Noragami stops looking like a comedy about a broke god and starts to hurt.
Adachitoka draw him small and sullen, which makes the eventual competence land harder. He learns to work as a weapon, then to think like one, and the series hands him study scenes and slow moral repair instead of a power upgrade. He is fourteen forever, a detail the manga never lets anyone forget.
Spelling YUKINE
YUKINE opens on the ordinary Japanese word for snow, yuki, and adds a third beat. Six letters, three beats, yu-ki-ne, every one a plain kana with no long vowel and no doubling. The mistake is the ending: YUKINE finishes on an E that English speakers want to leave silent, and it is not silent. Three vowels, alternating with three consonants.
