Yusuke Urameshi is fourteen, skips school, fights constantly and is written off by every adult who has met him. Then he pushes a small boy clear of a moving car and is killed instead. The underworld's reaction is bafflement: nobody had a place ready for him, because nobody expected the delinquent to die well. He is offered a series of trials to get his body back, and he takes them.
The job that follows is Spirit Detective, which means handling demons who cross into the human world. His signature move is the Spirit Gun, spirit energy fired from an extended index finger, and early on he can manage exactly one shot a day. Training under Genkai, a foul-tempered master who picks him as her successor, is what turns that single bullet into a career.
Yoshihiro Togashi ran the manga in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1990 to 1994 and Studio Pierrot animated 112 episodes from 1992. The series shifts from ghost stories to tournament fighting partway through, and Yusuke's constant refusal to take any of it seriously is what keeps the tone intact across the change.
Spelling YUSUKE
YUSUKE is the given name, six letters, with the family name Urameshi left out of it. The kanji is 幽助, and the first character carries a long vowel, so a strict transliteration gives Yuusuke or Yusuke with a macron. The tiles have no room for the extra U. That same character 幽 opens the series title, Yu Yu Hakusho, where English also drops the length.
