Annie Leonhart finished fourth in the 104th Cadet Corps and chose the Military Police, which is what a soldier picks when she wants a quiet posting in the interior. She is small, blonde, permanently unimpressed, and she keeps a distance from the people around her that the others read as arrogance. Her one moment of warmth in training is teaching Eren how to throw a man twice his size.
The corps trains everyone in the same hand-to-hand drills, all grabs and holds. Annie kicks. Her father drilled a style into her before she enlisted, low sweeps and heel strikes that turn a bigger opponent's weight against him, and it looks nothing like the manual. Eren notices. He is the only cadet who asks to learn it, and that lesson matters later far more than either of them expects.
Hajime Isayama began Attack on Titan in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009, and Wit Studio animated the first season in 2013. Annie carries the back half of that season. The fight it builds towards in the streets of Stohess is the point where the anime proved it could stage something other than blades against necks.
Spelling ANNIE
ANNIE is five letters with a double N in the middle, and the middle is where the row usually breaks. English readers who know the name from anywhere else will spell it right by habit. The Japanese is a different matter: it reads Ani, one short N and no doubling at all, so anyone typing straight from the audio reaches for ANIE first.
