Eren Yeager was in Shiganshina on the day the outer wall broke, and he watched a titan eat his mother while somebody carried him away. He enlisted that same year, announcing to anyone in earshot that he would kill every last one of them. The series treats this as a child's grief hardening into a policy, then spends a decade of story showing what a policy like that costs to keep.
Freedom is the word he actually uses. Eren is less interested in safety than in the idea that something exists on the other side of the wall and he might be allowed to walk to it. Armin's book put that thought in his head. Everything that follows, including the parts of him that eventually frighten his friends, grows out of a nine-year-old wanting the horizon.
Isayama started the manga in Bessatsu Shonen Magazine in 2009 and finished it in April 2021, and the argument about where Eren ended up ran hot enough to reach newspapers that had never covered manga. Attack on Titan has sold well past 100 million copies. Few shonen leads have travelled this far from the boy who shouts in episode one.
Spelling EREN
EREN is four letters and about as clean as this dataset gets, three Japanese sounds mapping one to one onto the English. The catch is the family name. Official English spells it YEAGER while the German original is Jaeger, translations have used both, and the game does not want either. Four tiles, two E's, one sitting in each half of the word.
