Daiki Aomine came out of the Generation of Miracles, a middle school year group so strong that its members stopped competing with anybody but each other. His game is formless: shots taken from angles that should not work, released from wherever his body happens to be, learned on outdoor courts rather than in a gym. Nobody guards it, because nobody can predict it.

Winning that easily broke him. He skips practice, arrives late to matches, and plays with a boredom that reads as contempt, because the sport stopped offering him anything he wanted. Tadatoshi Fujimaki uses him to ask what becomes of a prodigy who runs out of opponents at sixteen, which is a real question in Japanese school sport.

He also used to pass to Kuroko, and that history is the load the Touou match carries. The two of them were a partnership before Aomine outgrew it, and neither has quite finished the argument. Fujimaki ran Kuroko's Basketball in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2008, and Production I.G animated it from 2012.

Spelling AOMINE

AOMINE is six letters and opens on two vowels, AO, which is the Japanese word for blue. Every member of the Generation of Miracles carries a colour in the surname: Kise is yellow, Midorima green, Murasakibara purple, Kuroko black. Spot the pattern and the first two letters come free, leaving a straightforward mi-ne.
