Taiga Kagami plays power forward for Seirin, a school whose basketball club is two years old and has no reputation at all. He grew up in Los Angeles, returned to Japan looking for competition, and found a league full of people he could jump over. The problem is that jumping over people is most of his plan, and the Generation of Miracles have all seen that trick before.
His partner is Kuroko, who is invisible on court and passes to spots rather than to players. Kagami is loud, obvious and physical, so the pairing works as a straight trade. One of them draws every eye in the building and the other lives off the fact that nobody is watching. The series calls it a light and a shadow and means it literally.
What keeps him clear of the standard hot-blooded lead is appetite. Kagami wants the strongest opponent in the room, eats a frankly medical quantity of burgers, and takes a loss personally in a way that produces work rather than sulking. Fujimaki improves him on a schedule, with each Miracle forcing out a new piece of the game.
Spelling KAGAMI
KAGAMI is the family name, and it lands on a homophone: kagami is the ordinary Japanese word for a mirror, while his is written with characters meaning fire god. Six letters, two A's in the second and fourth slots, one G, one M. If both A's are green and the row still will not close, the trouble is the final I.
