Chrome calls himself a sorcerer and charges admission to see his collection, which is a shed of minerals he dug up himself and cannot name. Then Senku walks in, identifies half the shelf, and the sorcerer discovers he has been doing amateur geology his whole life. He signs up to the Kingdom of Science on the spot and never once resents being the second smartest person in the room.
What he brings is not intelligence. It is nerve and an enormous memory for where things are. He knows which cave holds the sulfur, which riverbed has the iron sand, and he will climb into either. The sulfa drug the team builds to save the village priestess runs on his legwork as much as on Senku's chemistry.
Riichiro Inagaki wrote Dr. Stone and Boichi drew it, in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2017 to 2022, with TMS animating it from 2019. The manga prints real procedures in the margins, which makes Chrome the reader's stand-in: he is the one asking why any of this works, and the answer is always given.
Spelling CHROME
CHROME is six letters and it is spelled like the metal and the browser rather than like the Japanese. In katakana he reads Kuromu, ending on a U, with no silent E anywhere in sight. The English localization reached for chromium instead. That final E is the whole trap: it is there, it says nothing, and a mineral collector named CHROM would have been the smarter guess if the row had five slots.
