Eisen carried the axe for the hero's party, and eighty years later the people who watched him work still describe the same thing. He did not dodge and he did not flinch. He simply arrived. Dwarves age slowly enough that he is still around when the story opens, retired to a quiet village, older and slower and entirely aware of both.
He trained Stark badly at first, in the way of a man who has never had to explain the one thing he is good at. He never told the boy he had talent, which produced a fighter who splits mountains and assumes he is a coward. The gift Eisen finally leaves him is a birthday cake recipe and a short note.
Frieren treats the old party as four different answers to mortality. Himmel died, Heiter drank and taught, Frieren went back to collecting spells, and Eisen kept working until his hands were slower than his memory and then stopped on purpose. He is the only one of them who gets to hand the axe on.
Spelling EISEN
EISEN is the German for iron, which is how this series names its warriors: Stark is strong, Himmel is sky, Frieren is to freeze. Five letters with two E's in the odd positions, and the EI pair at the front is where guesses go wrong. Spoken German makes it sound like eye-zen, but the tiles want the E before the I.
