Frieren is an elf mage, which means the decade she spent adventuring with Himmel, Heiter and Eisen took up roughly the space a summer takes for you. She said goodbye to the party assuming she would see them around. By the time she understood how little of them she had actually looked at, the human ones were dying, and the series opens at a funeral.
What she does about it is unglamorous. She walks north with an apprentice and a nervous warrior, collecting spells that remove stains, find treasure or fill a field with flowers, because that is what her own teacher did and because small magic is what people ask for. The plot moves at the speed of grief, which is to say slowly and then all at once.
Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe began the manga in Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2020, and Madhouse animated it in 2023 with a feature-length opening broadcast. It won the Manga Taisho in 2021. A fantasy story that starts after the final boss is already dead should not work this well.
Spelling FRIEREN
FRIEREN is seven letters and the German verb meaning to freeze, so the vowel order is IE and never EI. That is the mistake almost everyone makes, because FREIREN looks right and is not. Two E's, two R's, and the word alternates cleanly once the first four tiles land. She is the title character, so there is no family name to worry about.
