Erwin Smith commanded the Survey Corps through its worst years, sending expeditions past the wall on the theory that the answer to the titans was written down somewhere and could be found. He was a superb tactician and an unusually honest one. He tells his troops to their faces that he is spending them, which is the reason they follow him well past the point where following makes any sense.
His father asked a schoolroom question out loud, about how a walled population could have lost every memory of the world outside, and died shortly afterwards. Erwin took that question and built a military campaign around it. He admits, very late, that saving humanity was the excuse and finding out what waited in a basement in Shiganshina was the reason. It does not make the campaign wrong. It makes him honest.
The final order in Shiganshina, where he points a doomed cavalry line at a titan on a hill and tells them their lives already belong to the dead, is the scene people cite when they argue that Attack on Titan is more than monster spectacle. Wit Studio animated it in 2018 for the third season, and for a lot of viewers the show never climbs higher.
Spelling ERWIN
ERWIN is five letters and a plain German name, so every trap here is an English one. The W is a real W and not a V, however it sounds in the dub, and the ending is IN rather than the ERWEIN or IRWIN your fingers may prefer. The game wants the given name, and SMITH happens to be five letters too, which is a mean coincidence.
