Gabi Braun is a warrior candidate in Marley, raised inside an internment zone and taught that her people carry an inherited sin she can work off by fighting for the nation that fenced her in. She believes every word of it. She is also brave, fast and good at the job, which is the trouble: everything Marley told her about herself she has since proved on a battlefield.
Viewers hated her on arrival, and that was the design. Gabi turns up in the fourth season doing to the audience's favourites precisely what those favourites spent three seasons doing to strangers, and with the same clean conscience. Watching a fandom argue about whether a twelve-year-old had it coming was, in a sense, the arc working exactly as intended.
She is Reiner's cousin, and the parallel is deliberate. Both volunteered for a role they did not understand, cheered on by adults who understood it perfectly. What Reiner knows and cannot say out loud, Gabi has simply not learned yet. The fourth season keeps putting the two of them in the same frame and letting the distance between them do the talking.
Spelling GABI
GABI is four letters and short enough that guesses usually die on the vowels rather than the consonants. It takes a hard G as in gap, not the softer G of the English name Gabby, and there is no doubled B and no Y on the end. Japanese writes it in two clean syllables, ga and bi, with nothing added and nothing stretched. What you hear is what you type.
