Hange Zoe runs research for the Survey Corps, which in practice means capturing live titans, naming them, and asking them questions they cannot answer. Sonny and Bean got names, feeding schedules and a great deal of affection. When someone killed the pair of them in the night, Hange grieved openly, and the rest of the corps found this odd rather than touching.
The curiosity is armour. Hange describes lifting part of a dead titan and finding it far lighter than a body that size has any right to be, and the discovery turned a nightmare into a problem with a solution hiding somewhere inside it. Treating the things as research subjects rather than demons is how one soldier stays functional in a job with a mortality rate like this one.
Isayama has left Hange's gender deliberately unspecified, and Kodansha's English editions steer around pronouns because of it. Romi Park voices the character in Japanese, pitching the enthusiasm somewhere close to a fever. Command of the corps eventually lands on Hange, which is a promotion nobody in the story, least of all Hange, treats as good news.
Spelling HANGE
HANGE is five letters and one of the harder rows here, because the spelling and the pronunciation are not on speaking terms. The Japanese reads Hanji, and fan translations used HANJI and HANGI for years before the official English settled on HANGE. That final E is silent in most dubs, so nothing in the audio warns you it exists. Learn this one as a shape, not a sound.
