Iris is a sister of the Holy Sol Temple, attached to Special Fire Force Company 8, and she goes out on every call. When a person turns into an Infernal, the company's job is to put them down, and the church's framing is that this releases a soul rather than ending a life. Iris kneels and says the words while the rest of the squad fights.
She is not a fighter and the series never pretends otherwise. What she does is make the killing legible to the people doing it, which in a setting where the victims are still recognisable neighbours is not a small job. The rest of Company 8 shields her as a matter of course and nobody discusses it much.
The church is less clean than its rituals. Fire Force spends its run pulling at what the Holy Sol Temple knows about spontaneous human combustion and how long it has known, and Iris sits exactly where sincere faith meets an institution with a filing cabinet. She keeps praying through all of it.
Spelling IRIS
IRIS is four letters and an ordinary English word: the flower, the coloured ring of the eye, and before either of those the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Fire Force names most of its cast in Japanese and then hands the sisters plain European names. Nothing to romanise and no long vowels here, with the two I's sitting in the odd positions.
