Kallen Stadtfeld attends Ashford Academy as a sickly Britannian heiress who misses most of her lessons. Kallen Kozuki, the same person, flies for the Japanese resistance under her mother's name. The illness is a costume. Her father is a Britannian noble, her mother is Japanese and works in his house as a servant, and Kallen picked the side her passport says she is not on.
The machine is the Guren, a red knightmare frame with a radiant wave surger built into its right arm. It does not cut or shoot so much as make the target swell until it bursts, which is an unpleasant thing to watch happen to a cockpit. In a series full of ace pilots, Kallen is the one the enemy plans around, and Suzaku in the Lancelot is the only rival who reliably matches her.
Her loyalty is the interesting part. She follows Zero, the masked leader of the Black Knights, without knowing that he is a classmate she has spent two years being rude to. The show keeps that gap open for a long time, and most of what Kallen does before the reveal reads differently after it. She was voiced by Ami Koshimizu, who plays the school act at an entirely different pitch.
Spelling KALLEN
KALLEN has a double L, and the Japanese does not warn you about it. The katakana reads Karen, with one R that English turns into a single L, so Karen and Kalen both feel natural and both come up a letter short. Six tiles, two L's in the middle, and the first name is what the game wants rather than Kozuki or Stadtfeld.
