Kururugi Suzaku joined the Britannian military as an Honorary Britannian, the legal status the empire gives conquered people who enlist. His countrymen call him a traitor and the empire treats him as equipment. He accepts both readings. His argument is that change made by force is worthless, so the only honest route is up through a system that despises him, one promotion at a time.
The Lancelot makes the argument possible. It is Britannia's first seventh-generation knightmare frame, built by Lloyd Asplund, and it needs a pilot willing to test something that might kill him. Suzaku is unusually willing. He fights on foot as readily as in a cockpit, kicks tanks, and survives things the animation frames as accidents. Lloyd treats him as the most interesting component in the machine.
Everything he does sits against Lelouch. They were friends at ten, they take opposite positions on whether the ends justify anything, and the series keeps putting them in cockpits facing each other. Suzaku is also carrying something from before the war that he has told nobody, which explains the recklessness better than the ideology does. The name is written 朱雀, the vermilion bird of the south.
Spelling SUZAKU
SUZAKU is the given name, not Kururugi, and the Z is the letter that decides the row. It is a real Japanese Z sound, 朱雀, the vermilion bird guarding the south in the old four-directions scheme. Six letters, three of them the vowels U, A and U, and no long vowel to argue about. Find the Z and the rest arrives quickly.
