Karma Akabane is in 3-E, the end class at Kunugigaoka Junior High, where the school parks students it has given up on so the rest can feel better by comparison. He arrives with the best test scores in the room and a record of hurting people, which the school considers a contradiction and he does not. Assassinating the teacher is the assignment. Karma treats it as recreation.
His first attempt is a knife hidden behind a handshake, and it fails the way every attempt fails, because the target moves at mach twenty. What follows is more interesting than the miss. Karma keeps trying, gets better, and slowly notices that the thing he is trying to kill is the first adult who has taken his contempt seriously instead of punishing it. He never stops sniping at people. He just picks better targets.
Yusei Matsui ran the manga in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012 to 2016 and sold over twenty million copies of it. Lerche animated two seasons from 2015. Karma is the reason the class works as a comedy: he is the one student willing to say out loud that a giant yellow octopus teaching them English is absurd, right before he tries to poison it.
