The deal he offers the Japanese government is simple and terrible. He will blow up the Earth in a year. Until then he will teach class 3-E of Kunugigaoka Junior High, and the students may try to kill him whenever they like, for a bounty of ten billion yen. Nobody else can get near him. He moves at mach twenty, which means the assassins have to be in the room already.
The joke the series runs on is that he is an excellent teacher. He grades every paper overnight, builds a separate study plan for each of twenty-eight students, flies abroad between periods to fetch a souvenir, and takes the assassination attempts as engagement. His face is a yellow circle with a permanent grin, and it changes colour to signal his mood, which the class learns to read faster than they learn algebra.
Weaknesses exist and the class farms them. He cannot swim, he is helpless against one particular green material that the government hands out as knives, and he is vain about hair he does not have. Yusei Matsui designed him as a gag and then wrote a school drama around him. By the time the year runs out, the children holding those knives have the standard problem of any good class: they do not want the teacher to leave.
Spelling KORO
Otakana wants four letters, KORO, and not the full Korosensei. The name is a pun the class invents: korosenai means cannot be killed, and sensei means teacher, so a student jams the two together and it sticks. Keep both O's. English ears often hear the first vowel as an A, and KARO is a dead row.
