Kishibe runs the special division and gets handed Denji and Power to make useful. His teaching method is an ambush. He beats them, disarms them, humiliates them, and repeats it daily, on the grounds that anything he can do to them a devil will do worse and without warning. The students hate it. They also stop dying, which is the entire argument.
He drinks constantly and does not pretend it is anything other than maintenance. Public Safety hunters have short careers, and Kishibe's has run long enough that he has buried most of the people he trained. Fujimoto draws him with a face like a dropped plate, scars laid over scars, and lets him say the quiet parts out loud in the flattest voice in the cast.
Among a cast of teenagers who fell into this job, Kishibe is the one adult who chose it and understood the terms before signing. He gives advice that is genuinely useful and never comforting, which in a series this bleak is the only honest kind available. He is also the rare mentor the story never softens into a warm one.
