Makima finds Denji in a gutter, holds his devil dog against her chest, and tells him he can die as a devil or live as her pet. She says it pleasantly. That first scene sets the whole relationship: everything she gives him is real, and everything she gives him is also a leash. He agrees on the spot, because nobody has ever offered him anything before.
She runs Public Safety Devil Hunter Special Division 4, and the people around her obey without noticing they have decided to. Colleagues follow orders they would question from anyone else. Enemies stop mid-sentence. Fujimoto stages her almost entirely through other characters' behaviour rather than through effects on the page, which is why the dread builds slowly and then refuses to lift.
The design does work too. Red hair, a ponytail, a plain suit, an unbroken pleasant expression, and eyes drawn with rings inside them that the anime lingers on. She is among the most drawn characters in the series by fans, and one of very few antagonists whom people describe first as calm rather than as frightening.
Spelling MAKIMA
MAKIMA is six letters with a mirror in it. MA at the front, MA at the back, KI holding the middle, and three A's all sitting in even positions. Once the shape lands the word fills itself in. The only real risk is mishearing it as MACHIMA, since that K is clean and never softens into a CH sound.
