Mahito was born from human hatred of other humans, which the series treats as a manufacturing note rather than a metaphor. His face is stitched in patchwork, his hair is knotted grey, and his technique, Idle Transfiguration, rewrites the soul of anything he touches. Since body follows soul in this world, the target's shape changes with it, usually into something that cannot survive.
He uses the technique on himself for combat and on strangers for entertainment, turning passers-by into transfigured humans he then throws at sorcerers in bulk. He is childish in the exact way a newborn is childish, learning fast, trying things out, and treating other people as material. Yuji hates him more than any other opponent in the story.
The argument he keeps making is that he is only the shape humans gave him, and that killing people is what people already do to each other. Nanami calls him what he is and refuses the debate. The fight between him and the first-years runs across the Shibuya arc and is one of the ugliest stretches Akutami has written.
Spelling MAHITO
MAHITO is six letters and it decodes neatly: the kanji read true and person, so the second half of the answer is literally hito, the ordinary Japanese word for human. Remember the irony and the spelling follows. He has no family name to confuse it with, and the H sits alone in the middle with a vowel on each side.
