Maka Albarn attends a school in Death City, Nevada, run by Death himself, where students pair off into meisters and weapons. Hers is Soul Eater Evans, who becomes a scythe in her hands. The target is ninety-nine evil souls and one witch soul, which promotes a weapon to Death Scythe. Her father already holds that rank, and she cannot stand to be in a room with him.
The father problem drives everything else. Spirit Albarn is a capable weapon and a serial philanderer who wrecked his own marriage, so Maka reads, studies, works and refuses to be impressed by anybody. Her strongest asset is not the scythe. She can perceive souls directly, a rare talent inherited from her mother, and it wins fights her arms could not.
Ohkubo's manga ran in Monthly Shonen Gangan from 2004, and the 2008 Bones anime gave it a Halloween-poster look: a laughing sun, a bleeding moon, buildings that lean at angles no builder chose. Maka is the straight man in a cast of very loud people, which in a shonen series usually means she is the one required to be right.
Spelling MAKA
MAKA is four letters with two A's, and it hides no Japanese trap at all. The katakana reads exactly as it looks. The risk is the neighbours: several anime names of the same length and rhythm sit one letter away, so a confident wrong first guess costs a whole row. Her family name, Albarn, is not what the game is asking for here.
