Soul Eater Evans is Maka's weapon, which at this school means he turns into a scythe and she swings him. He comes from a family of celebrated musicians and walked away from it, plays piano when he thinks nobody is listening, and has built an entire personality around the word cool, which he says often and earns occasionally.
Weapon and meister have to match wavelengths before anything works, and the pair spend the early episodes failing at that in front of witnesses. Soul takes hits meant for Maka, more than once and at real cost, then declines to mention it afterwards. The black blood he picks up early gives him a room inside his own head with a small red demon sitting in it.
He shares his name with the series, which fairly summarises how this show names things. Ohkubo's world runs on jokes made literal: the school is a skull, the sun has a face and laughs at you, the moon bleeds from the mouth, and the boy called Soul Eater eats souls for a living.
Spelling SOUL
SOUL is an ordinary English word spelled the ordinary way, and that is the whole note. Four letters, no romanisation trap, because the name was English before it was ever Japanese. The only genuine risks are typing SEOUL out of muscle memory, or reaching for the family name Evans, which this row does not want.
