Marley is a military power on the mainland, and its advantage is a monopoly: it holds seven of the nine titans and fires them like artillery. The soldiers carrying those titans are Eldians, drawn from an internment zone inside Marley's own borders, and each one gets thirteen years of life from the moment of inheritance. The nation calls them honorary Marleyans and keeps them behind a fence.
The trick is expiring. The rest of the world has spent that century building guns, aircraft and armour, and a shell now does the work a titan used to do. Marley knows it. The invasion the story eventually turns on is not the act of a confident empire. It is a government watching its one advantage go obsolete and deciding to spend it while it still buys something.
The fourth season opens on a Marleyan trench war with no walls, no scouts and none of the faces anybody tuned in for, which lost some viewers and won the argument. It is the series demonstrating that the world it spent three seasons calling humanity was one province of a much larger map. MAPPA animated it from 2020.
Spelling MARLEY
MARLEY is six letters and reads as an English surname, which is the trap and also the rescue: the reggae spelling is identical, so the fingers usually arrive before the brain does. Japanese writes it Maare, with a stretched A and no L sound anywhere, so anyone learning the word from the audio may reach for MARE or MARLE. Take the six-letter English spelling.
