In Red and Blue the whole story sits in a set of journal entries on Cinnabar Island. A team found a rare Pokemon in the jungle, took its DNA, spent years engineering something stronger, and lost control of it. The result waits in Cerulean Cave behind the final gym, at level 70, with the highest stat total in the game and no reason to cooperate.
The 1998 film gave it a voice and an argument. Mewtwo builds an island fortress, clones a set of trainers' Pokemon and asks why anything made in a lab should accept the purpose it was made for. It is a surprisingly hard question for a children's film and the answer it reaches is not tidy.
Later games split it in two. Mega Mewtwo X is a physical fighter with an extra Fighting type, Mega Mewtwo Y is a glass cannon with an absurd special attack stat, and both were considered near the ceiling of what the format could hold. Smash Bros. has kept it in front of players who have never opened a Pokedex, which is how a lot of people know the pose before they know the story.
Spelling MEWTWO
MEWTWO writes a number as a word, and that is the part people forget: TWO, not the digit and not TOO. Six letters, two W's, no doubles. The name means the second Mew, so the front three letters and the back three are each a word you already know. The Japanese ends on a long vowel that English prints as an O.
