Misty runs the Cerulean gym, or rather she is the fourth of four sisters and the only one who treats it as a gym rather than a stage show. Water types, a Staryu and a Starmie, and a temper. She meets Ash when he steals her fishing rod and then wrecks her bike, and the debt keeps her travelling with him for years after both of them have stopped mentioning it.
She is the group's competence in the early seasons. She knows the type chart, she argues with the plan, and she carries a mallet that appears from nowhere when James says something. Later she inherits Togepi, which hatches in front of her and imprints, and the toughest character in the group spends two seasons carrying an egg.
Bug types terrify her, and neither the show nor Brock will let it go. Her sisters are the other running joke: three older siblings who treat the gym as a water ballet venue and hand challengers the badge rather than interrupt a performance, which is precisely the thing Misty left to get away from. She goes back to run it properly in the end.
Spelling MISTY
MISTY is one of the rare localisations that translated rather than renamed. In Japan she is Kasumi, a word for haze, and the English keeps the meaning intact. Five letters, one vowel and a Y doing vowel duty at the end, which is the slot people leave empty. No doubles, no silent letters, nothing dropped: MISTY, spelled exactly like the weather word.
