Mudkip
A blue amphibian starter that spent the late 2000s as the internet's least grammatical catchphrase.

Mudkip is the Water choice in Ruby and Sapphire, and the fin on its head is not decoration: the games say it reads movement in the water and the air through it, which is why it can find its way with its eyes shut. It evolves into Marshtomp and then Swampert, picking up a Ground type on the way, and that combination leaves it weak to exactly one thing.
Hoenn's three starters are usually argued about by which endgame you want, and Mudkip wins the argument on defensive typing alone. Swampert has been a competitive fixture for twenty years, which is not something you can say about most of the animals a nine-year-old picks at random in the first ten minutes.
Its second life came from a forum joke. A misspelled sentence about liking Mudkips escaped somewhere around 2007 and spread far enough that people who had never played a Pokemon game could quote it, which is a strange kind of fame for a starter from the third generation.
Spelling MUDKIP
MUDKIP is two English words pushed together, mud and kip, six letters with a K in the middle that no Japanese source would suggest. In Japan it is Mizugorou, from mizu, water, and none of that survives the crossing. The K is worth guessing early since it is the only unusual letter in the row.
