Reze meets Denji at a telephone box during a downpour and turns up again at the cafe he starts visiting daily. She is warm, direct and interested in him, which is not an experience he has had before. Fujimoto writes the courtship straight. For a stretch of chapters Chainsaw Man is a summer romance about a boy discovering that somebody might want his company.
Then the pin comes out. Reze is a Bomb hybrid, trained by a foreign power, and everything from the umbrella to the swimming lesson was preparation. The reveal works because the affection was not faked for the reader either. The manga refuses to retroactively turn her cold, which is why this arc is the one people name when arguing that Fujimoto can write.
Fans call it the Bomb Girl arc, and it stayed the most requested part of the series right through the anime's first season. MAPPA adapted it as a feature film rather than as television episodes, which is a fair measure of how much weight a single arc carries inside a manga that is otherwise quite short.
Spelling REZE
REZE is four letters, which sounds easy until you have to place the Z. It is the only letter in the row that is rare in English, so the moment it lands the word is done. Two E's, first and last, with R and Z between them. The Japanese runs to two beats, re-ze, with no long vowel to trim.
