Saber is the sword class of the Holy Grail War, and in Fate/stay night the servant filling it is a small blonde woman who takes the whole business far more seriously than her master does. Her blade sits inside a sheath of compressed wind that bends light around it, so opponents have to guess at its length. Guessing wrong about the length of a sword is fatal.

The war summons seven heroic spirits out of legend into a modern Japanese city, pairs each with a magician, and promises the survivor a wish. Saber's identity is the worst-kept secret in the franchise and the visual novel still handles the reveal properly. Kinoko Nasu wrote her as a king first and a knight second, which is why she keeps arguing about duty with a teenager who has never governed anything.

Type-Moon released Fate/stay night for PC in January 2004, a visual novel with three routes and a reading time measured in days. Saber anchored all three, then anchored a franchise: Fate/Zero, Unlimited Blade Works, a mobile game that has taken billions, and enough merchandise to keep a studio in business permanently.

Spelling SABER

SABER is the American spelling. The British SABRE uses the same five letters in a different order and will burn a guess. Japanese writes it セイバー, a straight loan of the English word, so the class names in Fate carry no romanisation trap at all. The only decision is the E before the R, and the game wants it there.
