Sasha Blouse grew up hunting in Dauper, a village in the southern mountains, and she came out of it with senses the rest of the regiment finds unnerving. She hears a horse before anybody sees it. She catches the change in the air ahead of a scouting party. On her first day of training she produces a stolen potato from inside her jacket and eats it in front of the instructor.
The hunger is a running joke and also a fact about where she comes from. Dauper was poor, and food that turns up is food you eat immediately. The series lets the gag run long enough to become affectionate and then uses it, more than once, as the thing that puts her in the wrong place at exactly the right moment.
She and Connie are the pair the show sends in to remind you what these people actually are: teenagers, badly fed, several years into a war they were conscripted into by geography. Yuu Kobayashi voices her in Japanese, and the country dialect Sasha slips into whenever she stops performing is written into the manga on purpose.
Spelling SASHA
SASHA is five letters carrying three separate hisses but only two S's on the page, because the middle sound is an SH written with an H. Japanese matches the English here, sa-sha, nothing added and nothing dropped. Watch the ending: it closes on the same A it opened with. The family name is BLOUSE, spelled exactly like the garment, and the game does not want it.
