Shinobu Kocho is the Insect Hashira and the only one who cannot perform the corps' basic requirement. She lacks the physical strength to sever a demon's neck, so she rebuilt the job around that: a thin stabbing blade, a body trained for speed rather than force, and wisteria poison brewed in doses no human could survive. Insect Breathing is what happens when someone refuses to accept a disqualification.
She also runs the Butterfly Estate, where injured slayers recover, which makes her the corps' best pharmacologist as well as one of its deadliest members. The pleasant tone is a decision. Her elder sister Kanae was killed by a demon and asked her, dying, to try being kind to them, so Shinobu smiles her way through every conversation with something she intends to kill.
Tanjiro is the first person to say out loud that she seems angry, which lands like a slap because he is right and nobody else noticed. Of all the Hashira she is the one whose plan against the Twelve Kizuki takes the longest to set up and pays off in the least expected way.
Spelling SHINOBU
SHINOBU is seven letters for four kana, since SHI writes し with three of them. Two of the three vowels are the same sound family, i then o then u, so the row is finished by consonants rather than vowels. Otakana wants the given name. Kocho, 胡蝶, means butterfly, which is why the estate is named the way it is.
