Tengen Uzui is the Sound Hashira, and he arrives dragging a genin's worth of jewellery and two enormous cleavers chained together. The flamboyance is a costume over something bleak: he was raised in a shinobi clan that treated its own children as expendable, watched most of his siblings die for it, and left with three wives and a decision to value people instead of missions.
Sound Breathing is his own creation and his fighting works like a metronome. He reads an opponent's rhythm as a musical score, finds the gap in the beat, and detonates explosives in it, which is the least subtle possible use of an actually precise technique. His wives, Makio, Suma and Hinatsuru, work as infiltrators, and the Entertainment District arc opens with all three of them missing.
That arc is the one that turned ufotable's adaptation into a national event in early 2022, and it is Tengen's from the first episode to the last. He also spends it giving the recruits orders that amount to staying alive being more flashy than dying, which is more or less his entire philosophy.
Spelling TENGEN
TENGEN is six letters that fold in half: TEN and GEN, the same three-letter shape twice with one consonant changed. Two E's, one at position two and one at position five. Otakana wants the given name, not Uzui. The N in the middle closes its syllable, so it is ten-gen rather than te-ngen, which is what trips people saying it aloud.
