Viral fights for the Spiral King's army and carries a sword against people who fight with drills. He loses his first duel with Kamina and Simon, then loses several more, and every defeat sharpens him rather than removing him from the story. Most series would have retired him after two appearances. Gurren Lagann keeps him across all twenty seven episodes.
Beastmen are manufactured rather than born, a fact the series eventually explains, and it hands Viral a grievance much larger than any single fight. He is later made unable to die, and the immortality is presented as a punishment: everyone he has ever measured himself against will age out and leave him standing there.
That makes him the show's most interesting antagonist almost by default, since he is the only one who has to keep living with the results of everything. His rivalry with Kamina starts as a joke about teeth and turns into the one relationship in the series that runs on stubbornness rather than belief.
Spelling VIRAL
VIRAL is five letters and an ordinary English word, which is the trap: the row rewards you for not overthinking it. Japanese writes the name ヴィラル, using a katakana V that exists only for foreign sounds. Two vowels, I then A, one R and one L, and nothing in the word doubles anywhere.
