The second of three legendary birds, and the name announces which one it is in Spanish.

Zapdos lives in the abandoned Power Plant east of Cerulean, which you reach by surfing down a river most players never think to try. Electric and Flying, wings drawn as jagged yellow spikes, and the Pokedex says it gains power when struck by lightning rather than being hurt by it. Level 50, one of a kind, and no second chance if you knock it out.
The three birds are meant to be read together. Articuno freezes, Zapdos shocks, Moltres burns, and each one guards a corner of the first map. The second film in 1999 put all three in the same story and had their fighting wreck the weather, which is the closest the anime has come to treating them as forces rather than animals.
Later generations gave the trio regional variants with different types and much stranger faces, including a Zapdos that gave up flight for legs and a fighting stance, but the originals are the ones people picture. Their names are the giveaway that all three were designed as a set rather than found separately, which the games never say out loud.
Spelling ZAPDOS
ZAPDOS ends in dos, the Spanish word for two, because it is the middle bird of three: Articuno takes uno, Moltres takes tres. Six letters, a single S, and the Z at the front closes the row the instant it lands. Japan skipped the counting joke entirely and named it Thunder, so the Spanish is an English-side invention you can rely on.
