Chrollo Lucilfer runs the Phantom Troupe, thirteen thieves who mark themselves with a twelve-legged spider and take whatever they decide is theirs. He grew up with most of them in Meteor City, a landfill settlement whose residents are not registered as existing anywhere. That fact explains a good deal about how the Troupe treats property, and rather less about how it treats people.
His ability, Skill Hunter, stores other people's Nen abilities in a book. Taking one costs him a set of conditions: he has to see the ability used, ask about it, have the answer given, and touch the owner with his palm, all within an hour. Once the page is written he can use that power for as long as he keeps the book open in his hand. Close the book and everything in it switches off.
The manners are the unsettling part. He is polite, softly spoken, interested in what other people can do, and completely without a floor under any of it. Kurapika wants him dead for a massacre the Troupe committed years earlier, and their eventual meeting is one of the tensest sequences Togashi has drawn, because Chrollo's calm never breaks even when the odds turn.
Spelling CHROLLO
CHROLLO is seven letters for a name the Japanese writes in three beats, read Kuroro. The English spelling adds an H after the C and doubles the L, and neither change is audible. Say the name aloud and you will type KURORO, which is not the answer. Remember the silent H and the double L and the row solves itself.
