Ging Freecss abandoned his son with a relative on Whale Island and went back to work. What he left behind was a box that only a Hunter's licence could open, containing a recorded message. Gon takes the licence exam mostly to reach that box. The message, when he finally hears it, is Ging telling him not to bother looking, which is either honesty or the worst possible parenting.
Professionally he is one of the best Hunters alive: a Double Star Ruins Hunter, an archaeologist who finds things nobody else can, and a name that opens doors when Gon says it. Everyone who has worked with him describes roughly the same person, someone brilliant and entirely uninterested in obligations. Several of them also warn Gon that finding Ging will not be the reward he expects.
The structure of Hunter x Hunter depends on him staying offstage. Gon's motive is a person he has never met, so every arc is a detour, and Togashi keeps the detours interesting enough that readers forget the premise for a hundred chapters at a time. When Ging finally speaks at length, he explains his own absence without once apologising for it.
Spelling GING
GING is four letters that open and close on the same one, and the Japanese does not lead you there. The katakana reads Jin, which is what you would write from the audio, and the official English is GING. Treat it as a spelling to memorise rather than one to work out. Two G's, an I, an N, and no room for anything else.
