Grace Field House looks like the best orphanage imaginable. Thirty-eight children, a garden, a mother who reads to them, and daily tests they treat as a game. Emma is the fastest, the loudest, and tops the scores alongside two friends, Norman and Ray. Then a younger child leaves for adoption, forgets a toy, and Emma goes down to the gate to return it.
What she does next defines the series. She refuses to leave a single child behind, including toddlers who cannot walk far, which every rational plan in the story identifies as the reason that plan will fail. She is not naive about the cost. She simply will not accept the arithmetic, and the writing treats that as a strategy with consequences rather than as a virtue.
Kaiu Shirai wrote the manga and Posuka Demizu drew it, in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2016 to 2020, twenty volumes. CloverWorks animated the first arc in 2019 and that season is close to a perfect adaptation. Demizu draws children with enormous eyes and open faces, which is a large part of why the reveal at the end of the first chapter lands as hard as it does.
Spelling EMMA
EMMA is four letters with a doubled M, and that pair is the only thing to get right. There is no Japanese trap, since the name is English inside a story set nowhere in particular and the katakana エマ hands it straight back. Two of the four letters are the same, which is unusual enough in a short row to be worth guessing early. No surname is on file.
