Sister Krone is sent to Grace Field after headquarters begins to suspect that something there has gone wrong. Her brief is to assist Isabella. Her actual ambition is to replace her, and she makes very little effort to hide that from the children, whom she identifies immediately as the fastest available route to Isabella's first real mistake.
She is drawn and animated with enormous energy, which caused an argument. Posuka Demizu gives her exaggerated expressions and a physical presence the anime pushes further still, and plenty of viewers found the depiction of the only prominent Black character in the cast uncomfortable. The writing hands her more than the caricature suggests: a childhood inside the same system, a real intelligence, and a private conversation with her doll about how far ambition gets anybody in a place like this.
As a threat she works because she is unpredictable in a way Isabella never is. Isabella follows the rules. Krone plays her own game with the same children, and for a stretch of the first arc nobody, the reader included, can be certain which of the two adults is more dangerous to have in the building.
Spelling KRONE
KRONE is five letters, and the trap is an English word that fits the same shape: crone, with a C. This one starts with a K. The name is German for crown, spelled the same way as the Danish and Norwegian currency, and the E at the end is sounded rather than silent. Sister is a title here, so the tiles want KRONE on its own.
