Isabella runs Grace Field House and is very good at it. She is warm without being soft, remembers every child's temperament, and the affection is not faked, which is the part that unsettles people. She is also grading them, because the daily tests measure the thing her employers are paying for, and she signs off personally on every departure from the house.
She grew up in the same system. The manga gives over a chapter to how a girl in her position ends up with this job, and the answer involves a choice made under conditions where the other option was worse. It reframes her without excusing anything, and it is the point where The Promised Neverland stops being a thriller about children and starts being about the adults who keep the machine running.
Against Emma and Norman she is the better tactician for a long stretch. Isabella has done this before, knows every hiding place in the building, and lets the children believe they are ahead of her. Kaiu Shirai writes her as the reason the early volumes are so tense, because the horror is not the monsters, it is the woman with the keys who tucks you in.
Spelling ISABELLA
ISABELLA is eight letters and the doubled L is where a row goes wrong, since the name also exists as Isabela with one. Four of the eight letters are vowels and three of those are A, so an early A in the right slot is unusually informative. The children call her Mama, which is four letters and tempting, and it is not the answer the game is after.
