Norman is the strategist among the three oldest children at Grace Field House. He runs the simulation in his head, plans several moves out, and is calm in a way that reads as gentle until you notice he has already worked out who is most likely to die. Emma supplies the refusal to abandon anybody. Ray supplies the cynicism. Norman turns both of those into a schedule.
The escape plan is his. It involves rope, a wall, a tracking device none of them are supposed to know about, and a timetable built around the house's own routines, and it is written by a child who has never once been outside. What makes him interesting is his willingness to sacrifice, including himself, which is precisely the thing Emma refuses to let anybody do.
Kaiu Shirai and Posuka Demizu spend the first arc setting the three children against Isabella in what amounts to a long game of chess played by people who cannot admit that they are playing. Norman is the reason a reader believes the children have a chance, and he is also the reason the middle of that arc is so uncomfortable.
Spelling NORMAN
NORMAN is six letters, opens and closes on the same N, and holds no Japanese trap at all, since the name is English and the katakana ノーマン returns it whole apart from a long vowel English never writes. Two N's, one M, and the vowels are an O and an A. Guess the M in the middle and the row tends to finish itself.
