Himmel led the party that killed the Demon King, and he was vain about it in a specific and forgivable way. He liked being commemorated, and there is a statue of him in an unreasonable number of towns. Frieren mocked him for it while he was alive. She now uses those statues as landmarks, which was probably the point he was too polite to make out loud.
He was also relentlessly decent in small increments. He fixed things that were not on the route, learned people's names, and asked an elf to come and watch the meteor shower again in fifty years without expecting her to understand why fifty years mattered. Most of the flashbacks in the series are him doing something minor that turns out later to have been the entire lesson.
His name is the German for sky or heaven, and the series plays that straight. The central question is put by his absence: what an immortal owes the people who only get eighty years, and whether the answer can still be worked out once they are gone.
Spelling HIMMEL
HIMMEL is six letters with a double M in the middle, which is the pair guesses drop. It is German for sky, and the doubled M comes from the German spelling rather than from anything Japanese. Two syllables, him-mel, and the second vowel is the one people misplace as an A. Once that double M turns green the row finishes itself.
