Leorio Paradinight takes the Hunter Exam in a suit, carrying a briefcase, surrounded by teenagers. He announces early that he is in it for the cash. The truth arrives a few episodes later: a friend died of an illness that had a cure his family could not afford, and Leorio intends to become a doctor who treats people without asking what they have.
He is the weakest fighter of the four main characters by a wide margin and the series never pretends otherwise. What he has instead is medical school, a short temper aimed at the right targets, and the willingness to shout at people the others are too polite to shout at. When Kurapika goes quiet and dangerous, Leorio is the one who notices and objects.
He is also, quietly, the adult. He is nineteen when the story starts, older than everyone else in the group, and he handles the parts of being a Hunter that involve paperwork, hotels and money. His one famous Nen moment happens in a crowded auditorium and involves punching someone through a screen, which the audience enjoys considerably more than the target does.
Spelling LEORIO
LEORIO splits an R and an L out of the same Japanese sound. The katakana reads Reorio: the first sound becomes an L in English, the second stays an R, and no rule tells you which is which. Four of its six letters are vowels, running E, O, I, O around two consonants. Say it in four beats, re-o-ri-o, and LEORIO lands.
