Stark ran from the fight that destroyed his village and has organised his entire self-image around that one afternoon. He trained under Eisen, who never told him he was any good, so he arrives in the story convinced he is a coward carrying a large axe. The axe work suggests otherwise. So does the fact that he keeps turning up for the next fight.
Frieren's answer to courage is not a speech. It is a running observation that the trembling and the swinging happen at the same moment, in the same person, and that only one of the two is load-bearing. Stark is frightened of the demon, frightened of the dragon and thoroughly frightened of Fern, and he handles all three by moving forward while scared.
He is the comic relief as well, and the series is happy to leave him there for whole episodes: the birthday cake he cannot admit he wants, the date he barely survives, the apologies he offers to people who were not asking for one. His name is German for strong, which lands as a promise or a joke depending on the week.
Spelling STARK
STARK is five letters, an ordinary English word and a German one meaning strong. There is no long vowel and no romanisation trap, because Frieren takes its names straight out of German rather than through Japanese sounds. The only difficulty is the consonant cluster at the front: ST, then ARK. One vowel across five tiles, sitting in the middle.
