Veldora Tempest is a storm dragon, one of the four true dragons, locked by a hero inside an unbreakable prison in a cave. He cannot leave and cannot be killed, and he has spent three centuries bored to a degree the series treats as a character trait. Rimuru arrives with no eyes, no name and no fear, and the two of them get talking.
The friendship is the founding event of the story. Veldora hands Rimuru a family name, Rimuru gives the dragon a name in return and eventually a way out, and Veldora spends much of the series inside the slime reading manga. That sentence makes sense in context. Barely, but it does.
His siblings are the other true dragons, and their existence sets the ceiling for what power means in this world. Veldora himself is written as loud, posturing and faintly ridiculous, with a laugh the light novels spell out in full, and he is entirely serious the moment somebody threatens his friend.
Spelling VELDORA
VELDORA starts with a V, a sound Japanese has no native kana for. Writing it takes ヴ, a modern invention for foreign words, which marks the name as an import from the first letter. The L is the other decision, since the kana uses the R row there and the sound alone would give you VERDORA. Seven letters, three vowels, and the D sits dead centre.
