Anya was an experiment. A research programme gave her telepathy, labelled her Subject 007, and she escaped into an orphanage, from which a spy adopted her because he needed a child in a hurry. She knows his secret. She knows her adoptive mother is an assassin. She tells neither of them, partly out of self-preservation and mostly because the situation is exactly like her favourite cartoon and she does not want it to end.
The comedy comes from the gap between what she hears and what she understands. She picks up an adult's entire plan and grasps about a third of it, then acts on the third. She wants peanuts, she watches Bondman, and her attempts to help the mission usually make it worse in a way that accidentally works.
Tatsuya Endo has serialised Spy x Family on Shueisha's Shonen Jump Plus app since March 2019, and Wit Studio and CloverWorks adapted it in 2022. Anya's reaction faces, drawn as pure smug delight or total panic, escaped the manga almost immediately and now turn up in comment sections that have nothing to do with anime.
Spelling ANYA
ANYA is four letters and the Japanese has a long vowel at the front. アーニャ is closer to Aanya, and English shortened it without comment. The Y in the middle is doing consonant work here, gluing the N to the final A, so an-ya is two beats rather than three. Opens and closes on A. The row wants the given name, not Forger.
