Damian is at Eden Academy because his father runs a political party the neighbouring state considers a threat to peace, and the school's honours dinners are the only setting where an outsider can get near him. That makes a six-year-old boy the entry point for an international operation. Loid's instruction to Anya is to befriend him. Anya's first move is to punch him in the face.
He behaves the way a boy raised on his father's indifference would behave, which is imperiously and with a constant eye on approval that never arrives. His older brother is the favourite. His attempts to earn Stella stars are about one man who has never looked at him properly. The series is fairly unsparing about the Desmond household, then gives him two loyal friends and a crush he refuses to admit to.
The joke runs on dramatic irony. Damian is slowly, painfully warming to Anya. Anya can hear him doing it. Neither of them is capable of naming what is happening, and the entire school arc keeps generating comedy out of that gap.
