Asahi Azumane is a third year at Karasuno, plays as the ace, and has the beard and shoulders of a man who pays council tax. The face is a running joke in the club room. The temperament is the opposite of it: he is anxious, gentle and easily talked out of things, which is an awkward combination in the position whose job is to swing when everything has already gone wrong.
The break came against a school built entirely around blocking. They shut him down, he stopped scoring, and he walked away from the club for months. Furudate treats this as an ordinary injury rather than a moral failure. What brings him back is not a speech but a libero shouting at him in a corridor and a first year who has no idea who he is.
Once he returns, the fear stays in place. Asahi still gets blocked, still doubts himself, and still has to be set to anyway, because the ace is the player who takes the ball when the rally has fallen apart. Furudate ran Haikyu in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2012, and Production I.G animated it from 2014.
Spelling ASAHI
The row wants the given name, ASAHI, not Azumane. Five letters, two A's, and vowels alternating cleanly with consonants the whole way. Asahi means morning sun, the same word printed on the beer label, which is why it looks familiar to people who have never watched a minute of volleyball. No long vowels, nothing doubled.
