Daichi Sawamura is a third-year wing spiker and the captain of Karasuno, though his team mostly experiences him as gravity. He receives everything inside his zone, calls the floor, keeps two impossible first years from strangling each other, and gives off a calm his teammates find reassuring right up to the moment his face stops moving.

The receive is the point. Volleyball stories usually sell the spike, and Furudate spends as much ink on the players who keep the ball alive so a spike can exist at all. Daichi's read of where a ball is going to land is why Karasuno survives rallies it has no business surviving, and a good dig gets the same page space here as a kill.

He is also the argument for why this team is worth following. Karasuno has fallen a long way from its old reputation, and a captain who steadies a squad of talented lunatics is what makes the climb legible. Take Daichi off the court for a few minutes and the structure wobbles, which the series demonstrates rather than merely claiming.

Spelling DAICHI

DAICHI is the given name, and Sawamura is the surname the game leaves alone. Six letters. It is also a plain Japanese noun meaning the earth or the ground, which is unreasonably fitting for the man who owns the back line. The CH is one Japanese sound, so do not go hunting for a T in front of it.
